Georgia drivers heading out for New Year’s celebrations will see a break from most roadwork slowdowns, as the Georgia Department of Transportation will suspend most construction-related lane closures beginning New Year’s Eve.
GDOT’s lane closure suspension starts Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at 5 a.m. and continues until Friday, January 2, 2026, at 5 a.m. Even with fewer construction closures, motorists should still expect normal holiday traffic, including moderate to heavy congestion on major corridors like I-75, I-16, and around metro Atlanta, as well as routes through Macon, Savannah, and toward Florida and South Carolina.
Drivers are also reminded that increased patrols and DUI enforcement will be in place through January 1 as part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
GDOT cautions that some work crews may still be active near highways during the suspension and that emergency closures can happen at any time, so drivers should stay alert—especially in work zones. For real-time traffic updates, drivers can use the 511GA website or mobile app before and during their trip.
