Deer hunters across Northwest Georgia are heading into the final stretch of the season, with firearms deer season ending Sunday, January 11, 2026, in most of Georgia. (A limited number of counties in the southern part of the state have an extended firearms season that runs a few extra days.)
For hunters in Northwest Georgia — including areas like Chattooga, Walker, Dade, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, Floyd, Gordon, and Polk counties — the last weekend often brings a push to fill tags, harvest antlerless deer for herd management, and take advantage of cold-weather movement patterns before the close of firearms season.
While statewide season totals are still being compiled through Georgia Game Check reporting, early data from Georgia DNR’s WMA reporting this season shows 5,910 deer harvested on WMAs so far, including 3,837 bucks and 2,073 does, with 34,052 hunters recorded in those WMA hunt summaries. Hunters are reminded that harvest totals continue to change daily as new reports are filed.
Wildlife officials also remind hunters to:
-
Record and report harvested deer properly through Georgia Game Check
-
Follow either-sex day rules for the county or WMA being hunted
-
Prioritize safe firearm handling and visibility in the woods
-
Make a plan for processing and cooling venison quickly, especially during warmer afternoons
With the season nearly over, many hunters across Northwest Georgia are expected to be in the woods for one last opportunity before the statewide firearms close this coming weekend.
