Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader is correcting what he says is an inaccurate headline published in this week’s edition of The Summerville News regarding the recent indictment of a woman accused of inappropriate contact with an inmate.

The newspaper’s front-page headline described the defendant as an “Ex-Jailer.” Sheriff Schrader said that characterization is incorrect.

According to the sheriff, the indicted woman was never employed by the Chattooga County Jail or the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office. Instead, she worked as a nurse employed by the private medical provider contracted to provide healthcare services to inmates housed at the jail.

In a public statement, Schrader said he has contacted the newspaper seeking a correction to the headline.

“Nothing is worse to good employees than to be placed in the negative spotlight when reporting is inaccurate,” Schrader said. “To my folks working in the jail, keep up the good work! Also, great job by my Investigators in uncovering, investigating and arresting her.”

The indictment against the nurse remains pending, and, as with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations. She is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
