The City of Summerville is moving to strengthen its building inspection program, with Mickey Floyd taking on additional responsibilities as a building inspector while continuing his work with the city’s fire department.

The Summerville City Council recently approved the move as city officials work to update and expand local inspection services.

City Manager Jason Winters told council members that Floyd has certifications that will allow him to move into the inspection role. Winters said Floyd will undergo additional training and mentoring as he becomes familiar with the city’s inspection procedures and applicable state and local codes.

The city is also reviewing portions of its Code of Ordinances dealing with inspections to determine whether changes or updates are needed.

Officials said having Floyd available for inspection work will give the city greater ability to conduct building inspections when needed rather than relying entirely on outside assistance.

Floyd will continue to have responsibilities with the fire department while adding inspection duties to his role with the city.

The council approved the arrangement following discussion of the city’s building inspection needs and the work necessary to keep local requirements consistent with applicable codes.
