The Summerville City Council will have a lengthy agenda in front of it this evening, with matters ranging from road resurfacing and recreation improvements to a proposed data center moratorium, the sale of kratom and the possible renaming of one of the city’s best-known historic landmarks.

The council’s regular called meeting is scheduled for 5 PM this evening at the Summerville Depot. Mayor Rickey Hughes and council members Simone Adams, Dana W. Mosley, Jeff Martin, Joe Money Jr. and Zachary Martin are listed on the meeting agenda.

Several routine items are included on the consent agenda. The council will consider approving minutes from its August 10 meeting and authorizing the mayor to sign documents concerning employee health and dental benefits. The council will also consider authorizing City Manager Jason Winters to sign an agreement between the city and Adventist Health System Georgia, Inc. The consent agenda also includes a sign permit for Roundabout Auto at 299 Highway 48, the purchase of a $22,179 replacement pump for the Water Treatment Plant, and authorization for the city manager to sign a safety grant application.

A substantial portion of this evening’s meeting will involve bids and city infrastructure.

Council members are scheduled to discuss bids for three vehicles: an F-150 4×4 SuperCab for the Water Administration meter-reading operation, an F-450 4×4 CrewCab for the Water/Sewer Department and a used F-650 Super Duty for the Street Department. Each item is listed for discussion and possible action.

The council is also scheduled to award bids for a clear-span metal roof at the Wastewater Treatment Plant and for road resurfacing, with both items including authorization for the mayor to execute the resulting contracts.

Another item of local interest is the Summerville Recreation Restroom Renovation project. The council is scheduled to consider awarding the bid for the renovations and authorizing the mayor to execute the contract.

Public safety technology is also on the agenda. The council will consider entering into a one-year, automatically renewing contract with Pro-Vision to provide cloud-based storage for body-worn camera footage. Council members will also consider authorizing the mayor to sign a resolution involving a Land and Water Conservation Grant pre-application.

Two proposed names involving Summerville’s history and recreation facilities will come before the council.

The council is scheduled to consider renaming the Summerville Turntable in memory of former Mayor Joe Robert Norton. Members will also consider authorizing construction and the official naming of the drive serving the city’s new soccer complex as “Harry Harvey Dr.”

Another potentially significant discussion concerns data centers. The council’s agenda calls for members to discuss a moratorium and consider authorizing the mayor to sign a resolution regarding data centers. The agenda does not specify the proposed length or other terms of the moratorium.

Council members will also discuss the sale of kratom within the Summerville city limits, with possible action listed following the discussion.

Personnel matters include the proposed appointment of an interim gas director and supervisor, along with approval of pay for the position.

Finally, the council will consider allowing Trail Life Troop GA-1848 to camp overnight at Dowdy Park on Friday, December 18. Public comments are scheduled near the conclusion of the meeting before adjournment.
