The Georgia State Transportation Board will meet today at 9 AM in Atlanta to consider adopting updated regulations governing automated speed enforcement cameras in school zones.

The meeting will take place at Georgia Department of Transportation headquarters, located at 600 West Peachtree Street NW.

The board is scheduled to consider final approval of amendments to Georgia DOT’s rules governing permits for school zone speed cameras.

The proposed regulations address how local authorities apply for permits, the information required to demonstrate a need for cameras, and requirements for operating and maintaining the equipment.

The regulations also address circumstances under which Georgia DOT can modify or cancel a camera permit.

The changes are intended to bring the state’s permitting procedures into compliance with legislation approved earlier this year.

That legislation separately establishes a requirement for local voter approval when governments enter into or renew school zone speed camera contracts beginning July 1, 2027.

Today’s meeting will not determine whether voters must approve those cameras. Instead, board members will decide whether to adopt the proposed administrative regulations governing the state’s permitting process.

The Georgia Department of Transportation accepted public comments on the proposed changes through September 21.

The board meeting begins at 9 AM today and can be viewed through the Georgia DOT website.
