Fall is in the air and scarecrows could be popping up around downtown Summerville next week. The Better Hometown Committee is sponsoring the first Summerville Scarecrow Contest. Participants can begin putting up Scarecrows between Dowdy Park and First Avenue between Sept 17th and Sept. 29th, according to Chattooga County Extension Agent Rebecca Thomas. Prize will be awarded in various categories at 3 p.m. Sept 29th. There will be first second and third place winners, ranging from 25 to 50 dollars announced in three categories — Traditional, Go Green/Recycled, and Whimsical. Residents will also be able to select a People's Choice Award Winner. The People's Choice winner will receive an 8 x 10 plaque. Applications are available the Chattooga County Extension office and AM1180 Radio. There is a $10 application fee which will go towards projects by the Better Hometown Committee
