Holiday movies, television programs and advertisements seem to make it seem like the best time to give or get a new pet is under the tree on Christmas morning. According to PetMD not all Christmas pets live up to the hype, and bringing a new animal into the home during such an exciting holiday can be just the opposite of a positive beginning.

 

PetMD offers these tips:

 

First, prepare the family including the kids. The last thing you want is a frightened, cowering little animal overwhelmed by the kids' squeals of excitement and clamoring for a chance to hold it. Discuss how the pet will changes everyone's life in reference to feeding, walking and training; and responsibilities. 

 

Consider an alternative to a new pet such as making a donation to or visiting an animal shelter.
