Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader told AM 1180 Monday evening that an elderly couple appear to be alright after their vehicle left the roadway and plunged into a creek near the dump site on Lyerly Dam Road.

The couple were rescued by a passerby who saw the couple's car as it was sinking.  It is believed that two people helped to rescue the couple from the swollen creek as their car was going underwater.  The identity of the two people who rescued the elderly couple is not known but fire department officials and Redmond EMS credit the rescuers with saving the elderly couples lives.

The elderly couple was treated by Redmond EMS on the scene and Deputy Jason Burrage drove the couple home.  Sheriff Schrader said that when he arrived on the scene the elderly couple's vehicle was completely submerged.  He added " I would like to thank the ones that jumped in and pulled the couple to safety."
