A situation in the past couple of days at Hays Correctional Institute in Pennville has some employees saying there was a possible riot, others say there was no riot, some say they're not sure.

We spoke to DOC Field Manager Rick Jacobs briefly on Wednesday. He said there was no riot at the prison. When we spoke to Jacobs it was on his cellphone and he was inside the facility where cellphone reception is sketchy.

Our sources do indicate there was a situation at the prison in the last few days, possibly early Tuesday morning,  where a cannister of some type of quelling substance was thrown into a building dormitory, possibly tear gas or pepper spray.

Reportedly in the early morning hours, several prisoners, who were in lockdown, came out of their cells into the dormitory area. Our sources indicate a number of prisoners did this. When this happened the gas type canisters were thrown into the dormitory area. Apparently not enough was used to effect the prisoners who remained in their cells.

The prisoners were then taken outside and placed into what is called the "pen," a large fenced in area. They were returned to the dormitory at about 5-6 a.m. that morning.

While there is a question as to how serious the situation was and exactly where took place, several sources have confirmed that an incident did take place sometime this week at Hays.
