The Georgia Department of Education unveiled its new system for evaluating all public schools on Tuesday, and the results locally were mixed.

Replacing the old ranking system of Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP, schools are now being graded on a 100 point scale in a system termed The College and Career Ready Performance Index.

In the overall system rankings Trion City Schools graded by far the highest in Northwest Georgia at 96 with Calhoun City Schools in 2nd place at 89.4 and the lowest was Chattooga County Schools at 65.7.

State Schools Superintendent Dr. John Barge says while the old system of AYP gave each school a simple ‘pass’ or ‘fail’, the new rankings offer a much clearer guide for improvement.

Statewide the greatest struggle for students among all charted subjects was Mathematics II, followed by U.S. History.
