A scam regarding life insurance has caused Georgia Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens to issue an alert to Georgia residents.
According to the Insurance Commissioner, the scammers have been making unsolicited telephone calls to Georgia residents offering the proceeds of a life insurance policy for a fee. The scammer will tell the person that they are calling that they are the beneficiary on a policy, but in order to claim their proceeds they must first purchase a pre-paid credit card. The scammers then ask the victim to call back with the numbers from the card and read them the card numbers.
Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader has said before that residents should never fall for any type of scam that involves the purchase of a “Green-dot” card or any other type of pre-paid debit or credit card. Anyone asking you to pay to claim any type of prize winning, or in this case life insurance proceeds, is attempting to scam you.
If you receive such a call you should hang up on the caller immediately.
