The murder trial of Elaine Wilkins continued on Friday in Chattooga County Superior Court. Jurors heard testimony presented by the prosecution in the case. District Attorney "Buzz" Franklin is prosecuting the trial and contends that Wilkins' shooting of Robert "Bob" Packer in June of 2014 was murder. The prosecutor has presented witnesses and testimony from the medical examiner that he says proves that Wilkins' shooting was, indeed, murder.
David Dunn, the head of the Public Defender's Office, is representing Ms. Wilkins. In his opening statement to the jurors earlier this week, Dunn said that his client had "no choice" but to shoot Packer. The defense is expected to paint a picture for the jurors next week of a woman who was in a tumultuous relationship with a violent man, and that Packer had plans to kill several people including Wilkins, his own girlfriend.
District Attorney Franklin said that he may call one more witness when the trial resumes on Monday. The trial was delayed on Tuesday of this week because of winter weather and did not get started until Tuesday afternoon. Then on Wednesday of this week the defendant had an unspecified "medical emergency" that further delayed the trial. On Thursday there was no court due to the snow. Friday was the first full day jurors heard testimony.
