A newly established bike route connects Atlanta to Chattanooga and uses the Silver Comet Trail to do so.

U.S. Bike Route 21 consists of about 161 miles of existing trails and bike lanes beginning in downtown Atlanta at the Five Points MARTA Station and leaving the city along Peachtree Street, then connecting the Silver Comet Trail.

The bike route travels through Cobb and Paulding counties on the Silver Comet Trail before turning north in Cedartown in Polk County.

It uses two-lane country roads in Floyd, Walker, and here in Chattooga county to connect to Chattanooga

The bike route is part of a national network of similar routes intended to connect cities around the U.S. that will eventually include more than 50,000 miles of routes, according to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

The state reportedly has three other bike routes it is considering for Georgia: one with a north-south alignment, one traveling east-west and a third along the Atlantic coast. Those routes are still in the preliminary stages, and likely wouldn’t be established until late 2017.
