The call is on, once again, for a new jail in Chattooga County.

According to a recent report in the Summerville News, a Chattooga County Grand  Jury once again recommended construction of a new county jail.

According to the presentment following an inspection by members of the grand jury the jail was described as "unacceptable due to its age, limited size and general conditions."

It seems pretty much everyone is in agreement regarding the need, but not necessarily on a

significant financial burden, to the tune of around $14 million, for a new 200 bed facility.

Sheriff Mark Schrader and Commissioner Jason Winters – traveled to Forsyth on September 14th to ask the Georgia Department of Corrections about the possibility of obtaining the old

Abandoned Georgia Crime Lab located in Pennville; that Crime Lab closed back in 2010, due to budget cuts.

The sheriff said the building may come in handy as a sheriff's office or part of a new jail.

Georgia Department of Corrections officials said they would first have to check on a couple of things to see if it would even be possible to sell, or donate, the structure to the county.

At this point, Winters and Schrader are still awaiting word.
