The inmate who died in the Cherokee County Detention Center Monday has been identified as 58 year old Michael Lee Caldwell, of Benton, Missouri.  Caldwell was found unresponsive in the medical infirmary, at approximately 2:00pm by corrections staff.  Emergency medical care was administered but all attempts to revive him were unsuccessful

Caldwell was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, by Cherokee County Coroner Dr. Jeremy Deaton.

According to Dr. Deaton, Caldwell apparently hung himself with a bed sheet.

He had been arrested in the Gnatville community off County Road 18 last Friday after local law enforcement learned that Caldwell was traveling in a vehicle which had been reported stolen in Missouri; detectives there confirmed the theft and that Caldwell had fled the state.

He was charged with Receiving Stolen Property 1st Degree, and was awaiting extradition to Missouri, when he apparently committed suicide.

That incident is being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the Cherokee County Major Crimes Unit, and the JSU Center for Applied Forensics.
