Two industry expansions have recently been announced in Lafayette.

The City Council said that each of the businesses, Syntec and Dixie Color – will require 2500 Kilovolt Transformers – some of the largest ever used by the city electric system.

Council members voted to purchase the two transformers for the low bid of $20,500 each.

Syntec is adding new machines for increased production capacity and new electric capacity will be needed by January; while Dixie Color, a spin-off from Dixie Dye of Lafayette – will be located in the former PSI Building off South Chattanooga Street, where they'll be producing coloring products for the laminate-flooring industry starting next March (2016).

The council also approved the purchase of a third transformer, to act as a "replacement", in case of emergency.

According to Lafayette City Manager David Hamilton the costs associated with the purchase  of the transformers will be offset by the increased use of electricity over a very short period of time.
