A Calhoun man was driving west on Ga. 140 when he had a heart attack, lost consciousness, ran off the road and hit a tree, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

According to Trooper Lee Bowden:

Arnold Hudgins, 58, and his wife, Sherry Hudgins, 50, were traveling in a red Chevrolet car around 11:10 a.m. when he had a heart attack and ran off the road on Ga. 140 near Rush Chapel Road.

The couple hit a tree head-on after they went off the right shoulder and down an embankment.

Three witnesses stopped to help the couple, including an unidentified nurse practitioner who started CPR on Arnold Hudgins.

Bowden said Floyd Medical Center staff told him that those passersby probably saved Hudgins’ life.

FMC spokesman Dan Bevels said Arnold Hudgins’ condition was listed as critical and Sherry Hudgins’ was listed as stable Tuesday night.
