An inmate was found dead in his cell at the Floyd County Jail early Tuesday morning, according to Chief Deputy Tom Caldwell.

According to Caldwell and a news release from the sheriff's office, Robert Lee Maner, 45, was booked into the jail on February 10 on charges of possession of methamphetamines and had been in jail for 13 days. Mr. Maner was found alone in his assigned cell in L‐Block by jail staff after lockdown roll call.

“Mr. Maner’s family was notified of his death at approximately 3:00 a.m. and so we are now releasing basic details of the incident as protocol dictates” Caldwell said. “The GBI arrived at the jail at approximately 4:40 a.m. and are conducting a full inquiry into the matter already at Sheriff Burkhalter’s request.”

Per policy, all inmate custody deaths require a full investigation by an outside agency and a potential coroner’s inquest should the information and facts call for one.

Caldwell said he believes the investigation to show Maner committed suicide.
