More than 31,000 cases of Bumble Bee tuna products are being recalled because of spoilage organisms or pathogens that could result in life-threatening illness.
The company issued a notice through the Food and Drug Administration, saying the canned Chunk Light tuna was produced in February and distributed to retailers nationally. The recall is related to a deviation in the commercial sterilization process at a co-pack facility not owned or operated by Bumble Bee.
"The recall is being initiated out of an abundance of caution due to the possible under-processing of the affected products discovered by the co-packer during its routine quality audit," the company said. "Bumble Bee is working closely with the co-packer and the FDA to expedite the removal of products from commerce."
Bumble Bee has not received any reports of illnesses and urges consumers to throw away the tuna.
