A woman died after the car she was riding in ran off the road to avoid hitting a dog.

According to Polk County Coroner Tony Brazier 31 year old Miranda Thomas of a Rockmart address was pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta shortly after midnight Tuesday.

The vehicle was traveling down Antioch Road when the driver swerved to avoid a dog that was in the roadway. The vehicle then overcorrected, spun out and hit a ditch. The collision caused the vehicle to overturn, while striking several trees before coming to a stop.

Thomas was found pinned under the vehicle when emergency responders arrived and was rushed to Polk Medical Center and then air-lifted to Grady, where she later died.

Her husband, Samuel Thomas, who was driving suffered only minor injuries.

The couple’s infant daughter Sophia was in a car seat in the back.

She was not seriously hurt.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation.
