There will be programs celebrating veterans today in both Trion and Summerville today.

At 11 AM at Dowdy Park in Summerville, there will be a Veterans Memorial Dedication, featuring a program of patriotic music and the Post 5 Honor Guard will also be part of the program.

According to the Veterans Committee, nineteen new memorials will be added to the park, bringing the total to 660.

In Trion, the annual Veterans Day ceremony will begin at 1 PM at the park field’s veterans memorial. The public is encouraged to attend the event, which should last about an hour.

County resident Jim Day will be the featured speaker. Day achieved the rank of first lieutenant after over four years of active service and two of inactive, all in the Army. He then taught school and coached football at regional schools before retiring.

Jason Taylor will provide patriotic music. Trion High School student Paige Minter will sing the National Anthem. The Greater Rome Young Marines will present the colors.

In case of rain, the vent will move to the nearby pavilion.

“I feel like the most important thing I ever did outside of raising my family was my service in the army,” Day told the local paper. “Now, there are more than 340 million people in this county and only about 6.9 percent are veterans. I think it’s important to have these people recognized.”
