According to reports, 49-year-old Summerville man Joseph Lewis Clark Jr was arrested in Rome this week after allegedly trying to cash fake checks around the city.

Police reports from the Rome PD say that Clark went to the Hop N Shop on Calhoun Avenue to try to cash an $803 check written in 2017 by the Guardian Life Insurance Company. However, Clark’s name did not appear as the payee on the check, and was he authorized as a bearer.

Clark later tried attempted to cash a $303 check to Biddle Scrap on Calhoun Avenue. Reports said that the checks were made to look like they were issued by Biddle Scrap, but were actually forged.

Clark is also accused of stealing a Dewalt Drill from the Lewis Chemical Company on Lavender Drive. He is charged with three counts of 4th degree forgery, theft by taking, and failure to appear.
