Drivers were shocked to find a 2-year-old toddler, wearing only a diaper, walking down main street in lafayette at around midnight last Friday.
Police responded and bystanders had the child wrapped in a coat when they arrived. They went door to door trying to find parents, but finally a call to 9-1-1 revealed the troubled mom lived a street over, on north duke. She told police she had fallen asleep with the baby, but awoke to find the child gone and the front door ajar.
The door in the rental home was out of adjustment and would not latch completely, she said. Her husband is overseas on a national guard deployment.
The child was returned home and a DFCS worker said there would be no further investigation if the front door was repaired later in the day.
