County man Charles Williams reported to the sheriff’s office on Tuesday that he had been the target of a financial scam.

According to reports, Mr. Williams said that on Monday, December 17, he received a call from someone claiming to be from customer service at Apple.

According to Williams, the man on the phone was able to remotely access the computer and offered to  fix an undisclosed problem with Williams’ computer in exchange for $10. Williams said he did not give his banking information, but did provide the suspect with his credit card number.

Shortly thereafter, Williams continued, he became suspicious and contacted Apple customer service himself, who informed him that it was not they who had called him. Williams checked his credit cards, only to find that several purchases had been attempted. Only one attempt succeeded, totaling $952 in Hotels.com gift cards.

“Mr. Williams was advised to monitor his accounts and notify me if any additional charges charges appeared to notify law enforcement. Mr. Williams was also advised to have someone to look at his computer to make sure no one could obtain remote access in the future.”
