Coach Charles Hammon stepped down as head football coach at Chattooga High School on Thursday of this week. Coach Hammon presented his resignation to Supt. Jared Hosmer and spoke with Dr. Emily Mobbs, principal at Chattooga High School about his decision.
Hammon told WZQZ News on Friday afternoon that the hardest part of his resignation was informing the CHS football players about his decision. He spoke to the team after the day after their annual banquet which was held on Wednesday of this week.
Hammon said that his decision was based solely on the fact that his daughter, a junior at Fort Payne High School, has been participating in sports during her high school years and Coach Hammon has not been able to attend his daughter’s volleyball games. Hammon told WZQZ News that he made the decision that he would resign as head football coach in order to attend more of his daughter’s games during her senior year.
Hammon indicated that he would not be leaving the Chattooga County School System. Hammon said, “I love Chattooga. I’ve been over here for eight years now. I am not leaving…..I requested to be moved from the High School because I have been in football long enough to know that some of the assistants will be applying for the head football coaching job. We have a new school; we’ve been in the playoffs for the past six years; we’ve got great kids; we’ve won the state weight meet…the job is very appealing. Me being at the High School wouldn’t aid the process (of hiring a new coach) whatsoever.”
Hammon said that his intention is to stay with the Chattooga County School System and said that Supt. Hosmer indicated he would work with Hammon to find a position for him within the school system.
