The COVID-19 pandemic has caused some discussion about how people will be able to celebrate Independence Day this year. The City of Summerville has already announced that they will be cancelling the “Celebrate Independence” event that was scheduled to be held at the Chattooga County Ag Center. The LaFayette City Council discussed their Fourth of July celebration, but has yet to make a decision on this year’s event.
A notice was sent out by the City of Summerville cancelling this year’s celebration. There was some discussion of that decision at Monday night’s city council meeting. The decision to hold the event was voted on earlier this year by the council, and they appropriated the funds for the fireworks celebration. Some city council members questioned why they were not consulted about the decision to cancel the fireworks show. It appears that the decision to cancel was made by the mayor and city manager – without consulting the elected officials who voted on the measure. But as it stands, there will be NO July celebration this year.
On Tuesday evening of this week, the LaFayette City Council discussed canceling their “July 4th Freedom Festival”, but the council members did not reach a decision. Instead, they will wait until their meeting on June 8th to make a decision.
