Chattooga County voters will be headed to the polls again on August 11th to decide the Republican candidates for Chattooga County Commissioner and Probate Judge. However, where voters will be casting those votes is still up in the air.
In the June 9th Primary, the county elections were held in the gymnasiums of Menlo, Lyerly and Trion City Schools – but school will be in session on August 11th, which means the elections cannot be held in the gyms.
Chattooga County Election Superintendent Jon Payne says that he must abide by state mandated social distancing guidelines, which prevents some of the traditional, smaller polling places from being used. Payne says that the Trion Rec Centert, Lyerly First Baptist and the Lawrence Center in Menlo are possibilities for alternate, combined polling places, but no decisions have been made.
Payne would need to get an order from Chattooga County Superior Court to combine polling places for the runoff election, as was done in the June Primary.
