For months, the Chattooga County Agricultural Fair Council has been meeting trying to plan this year’s event.  After another successful event in 2019, fair council members began planning the 2020 event – but no one could have foreseen the COVID-19 pandemic.  Now, the fair council is grappling with the decision of if they should go ahead with the fair for this year.

WZQZ News spoke with several Fair Council members late last week about this year’s event.  Fair Council President Lyn Hall told WZQZ that the council will be meeting this week and a decision could come on if to go forward with plans or cancel this year’s event.

There are several factors that will help make that decision.  Right now, if Chattooga County 4-H and FFA members will be allowed to take part in the event when it rolls around at the end of August.  Also there is the issue of volunteers.  Every year, hundreds of people volunteer to work at the fair – some of those volunteers are elderly, and have already said that they won’t be volunteering during the pandemic.

Fair Council President Lyn Hall says that Peachtree Ride is still available to come to provide the midway rides for the fair, but there would be extra restrictions and cleaning practices that are being mandated by state health officials.

The council is expected to meet on Wednesday of this week.
