Water customers in three different water districts in Chattooga County are being asked to boil their water due to a test by the EPD at one of the wells belonging to the Chattooga County Water District.

On Friday, August 7th,  the Chattooga County Water District collected a sample from Well No. 7. When the results came back, the sample tested positive for microbes whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with “human or animal wastes,” according to the advisory.

The Chattooga County Water District is also supplying water to the City of Summerville Water Department and the Lyerly Water Department.  Because of this, City of Summerville water customers from the Chattooga River to the foot of Taylor’s Ridge and Lyerly water customers from Highway 100 to Chattoogaville and on to Josh Ward Road, along with all Chattooga County Water customers on the east side of Taylor’s Ridge are being asked to boil their water.

Chattooga County Public Works Director Joe Reed told WZQZ News over the weekend that tests performed last week came back showing that the microbes were still present at Well No. 7.  The county is treating the well to hopefully remove the microbes.  However, they may have to pull the pump at the well before the well will meet EPD requirements.

Reed says it could be mid-week before the boil water order is lifted.
