A tropical storm warning has been issued for Georgia as Hurricane Zeta strengthens in the Gulf Wednesday morning. Zeta is now a Category 1 Hurricane.  A tropical storm warning means tropical storm-force winds are expected in parts of north Georgia, including Chattooga and surrounding counties.

Zeta made landfall in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula on Monday evening as a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. It briefly weakened to a tropical storm but regained Category 1 strength Wednesday morning as it surged through the Gulf of Mexico toward the U.S., according to forecasters.

The latest path shows Zeta will likely hit Georgia on Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Winds of 30-40 mph with gusts of up to 60 mph are possible early Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service. There is also the risk of flooding and possible weak tornadoes.

A flash flood watch went into effect at 8 a.m. for all of North Georgia. The watch expires Thursday evening.
