A record number of voters turned out to vote in the election held on Tuesday in Chattooga County.  Around 10,000 voters cast ballots in the Presidential race, and for the first time, a Republican took 80% of the vote.

President Trump joins a short list of Presidential candidates to secure 80% or more of the vote in Chattooga County, but he is the only Republican candidate to do so.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt still holds the record, with over 90% of Chattooga County’s voters selecting him on the ballot.  Democratic President Harry S. Truman also received 80% of the votes from Chattooga County residents in 1948.

The last Presidential Candidate to receive 80% of the vote in Chattooga County was Georgia-native Jimmy Carter in 1976.

President Trump received 78% of the vote in 2016, but with fewer voters voting in the General Election.  Four years ago, 8,252 voters cast their ballots for President; 6,462 of those votes went to Trump.  With almost 1,800 more voters voting this year, President Trump received 8,058 votes to former Vice-President Joe Biden’s 1,852.
