Heating equipment is the leading cause of residential fires in Georgia. Fire officials, along with the Georgia Insurance Commissioner’s Office say consumers should keep heaters and other equipment away from curtains, bedding and other combustibles.

Far too many times, Chattooga County has seen tragedies and even loss of life due to improperly installed home-heating equipment, including both electric space heaters and wood stoves.  These tragedies can be prevented.

Heaters and fuel-burning appliances should  have sufficient ventilation to avoid the risk of fire and carbon monoxide exposure. Anyone using a kerosene heater should make sure it has an automatic shut off switch if it tips over and use K1 kerosene, not gasoline — which can cause an explosion.

Most importantly,  remember to install and regularly check smoke alarms.
