In a new recommendation released on December 2nd the CDC has given options for shortening the quarantine period for exposure to Covid-19. Currently the period to quarantine after direct exposure to the virus is 14 days and this is still the CDCs recommendation. However, in an effort to get more people to comply with quarantine and contact tracing the CDC has released a new, shorter period. The new recommendation for those with exposure, but no symptoms is 10 days without a test, and a 7 day quarantine period with a negative test. In both of these cases, the exposed person must continue to monitor for symptoms for the full 14 day period and if any symptoms exist, they are encouraged to quarantine again.
For those traveling the CDC recommends testing 2-3 days prior to travel and then testing again 3-5 days after returning home.
Even with the new recommendations from the CDC, local public health authorities determine and establish the quarantine options for their jurisdictions.
