Its almost wintertime in Georgia, are you prepared for the changing weather?

This week kicked off Georgia’s Winter Weather Preparedness Week. The Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) will distribute winter weather preparedness information via social media. They will also provide toolkits to local emergency management directors so they can share the information as well.

Each day this week covers a different topic regarding the weather and how to prepare for it, then how to respond during and afterward the winter weather occurs. Monday, December 7th covered the winter weather hazards that can impact the State of Georgia.

Tuesday December 8th covered the Winter Weather terminology. This went over the winter weather “alerts” (watches, warnings, and advisories) and what each of these mean.

Wednesday December 9th is the Winter Weather Preparation Tips topic. This topic covers how to best prepare for the weather events of winter and how to put together a “Ready Kit”. It also covers making a plan prior to the weather striking. GEMA has provided a list to make your own Ready Kit with recommended items. They include:

· Water. One gallon per person per day, for at least 3 days, for drinking and hygiene

· Food.

· Can opener. · Radio. Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert, and extra batteries for both

· Emergency charger

· Flashlight and extra batteries

· First aid kit

· Whistle.

· Face mask.

· Disinfectant wipes

· Hand sanitizer

· Moist towelettes, garbage bags

· Wrench or pliers.
