As 2020 wraps up and a new year begins, WZQZ takes a look back at the top ten news stories of 2020.

WZQZ has compiled a list of the top ten news stories of 2020. This list is based off of comments, shares, and other interactions with Facebook and the Web page.

1-COVID-19 arrives and the “slow to spread the curve” begins. In March we entered the pandemic and began a shutdown in an attempt to combat The Novel Corona Virus.

2-As COVID rages on, a new mask mandate at Walmart created quite an uproar. In July of this past year, a new mandate by Walmart to require masks for all shoppers created a debate on Facebook.

3-When schools announced in July that they would return to in person learning, some parents rejoiced, some parents voiced concerns, but the majority had an opinion on this matter.

4-When President Trump made a campaign stop in neighboring Rome, Georgia, it seems like everybody and their momma went. They also posted about it.

5-While all of Chattooga County talked about it, City of Summerville residents lived it, when it was announced that the water was contaminated with two manmade chemicals. The distribution of bottled water started immediately while long term solutions were researched.

6-In February, a body was discovered behind Walmart in a wooded area of the fields. No foul play was suspected.

7-In continuing to prove to be a year for the record books, the Easter Tornados of 2020 wreaked havoc over the county. Thankfully, no one perished in the EF-2 tornado, though the property damage was extensive.

8-Woes at Mount Vernon Mills stayed on the minds of many employees there this year. The economic downturn hit the already struggling mill hard; however it is still up and running and looking forward to a brighter future.

9-In November voters elected a New Commissioner and New Probate Judge, with Blake Elsberry and Gary Woods, defeating Jimmy Holbrook and Holley Strawn Gilliland.

10-The Trion Facts issued its last copy in February. After many, many years in print, the local paper folded with a fond farewell.
