Local Scouts recently volunteered at James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State Park.  The group from local Scouts BSA Troop 7 teamed up with the Friends of Sloppy Floyd State Park to work on the “Bring the Bluebirds Back Project.”

The project was started by longtime Superintendent of Sloppy Floyd State Park Derell Rush.  Mr. Rush came to Sloppy Floyd  in 1976. During his tenure he worked at adding a 25-site campground, a playground, 4 picnic shelters, and lots of trees. He won an award for the beautiful wildflower patch that was at the entrance to the park. His last big project was building a walking bridge all the way across the upper lake and started the Bluebird Project. Mr. Rush retired in 1997 after 30 years of service with the state but continued to work with the Friends of Sloppy Floyd.

Last week the local Scouts put portal protectors on the bluebird boxes getting them ready to be put up in the park. The Friends of Sloppy Floyd State Park said, “The “Bring the Bluebirds Back” project at the park was started by Derrell Rush several years ago; and with the help of the Scouts, we hope to continue that project. Be looking for the bluebirds when you visit the park.”
