UPDATE: The Georgia DOT told WZQZ News that the closure is for commercial and through-traffic only. Residents between Summerville and Mentone will still be allowed to access Highway 48. Trucks, commercial traffic and through-traffic will be routed down Highway 114 to Highway 35 in Gaylesville to get to Fort Payne.

According to the Georgia DOT, Alabama officials contacted Georgia officials and asked them to close Highway 48 between Summerville and the State Line for through-traffic and commercial traffick because of landslides on Alabama Highway 117 between Mentone and Valley Head, Alabama.

Chattooga County: Highway 48 in Summerville will be closed beginning today due to a roadway issue on the route in Alabama. Traffic heading west from Summerville will be detoured to SR 114. We will update as soon as we know how long the detour will be needed by Alabama DOT.
