Plans are underway for the rededication on Memorial Day Weekend of the WWI commemorative “Doughboy Statue” that was relocated to Veterans Park in Summerville, but not everyone is thrilled with the idea of the statue being relocated from Trion to Summerville.

The statue was originally given to the cotton mill in Trion for the company’s support of the effort during World War I.  The statue was eventually moved to the Memorial Home, which is just outside the Trion Town limits.

One Trion City Councilman expressed his disapproval of moving the statue in a post on WZQZ’s Facebook Page.  Thomas posted:

The Doughboy Statue is remarkable! But what is more remarkable is the fact it is not returning home to Trion. I have asked, and I ask again, why was Trion not asked about having this wonderful statue returned to its home town? Did any of the Summerville administration think to ask if Trion was interested before staking claim to it? How was this decision handled? Who is the responsible party for this decision? I will say this, THAT STATUE BELONGS BACK IN TRION.

The World War I-era statue is one of only 145 Doughboy Statues in the United States.
