Downtown Summerville, near the intersection of Highway 27 (Commerce Street) and Highway 48, has seen flooding issues for decades, but one Summerville councilman is stating publicly that it is time the city does something about the issue.

Several businesses in the area, along with some homes, were impacted by the weekend rains which saw somewhere between 4.5 and 6 inches of rain.  The rising floodwaters had reseeded by Sunday afternoon, but the cleanup from the water continues.

Summerville City Councilman Joe Money said on Tuesday, “It was sad to see several of our downtown businesses get flooded this weekend after a tropical storm stalled over Chattooga County. This flooding in our downtown area has been an issue for decades & must be addressed NOW! The City of Summerville will be working with State Of Georgia officials to help come up with a solution. I will be pushing this issue vigorously to help solve this problem. I will be letting you know details of possible solutions as they are presented to us.”
