In response to the recent Sandy Hook Elementary shooting and other violent school incidents, Trion City Schools  has installed electronic security systems at the main entrances of each school.

Once completely activated, all school doors will be locked after the normal flow of school traffic in the mornings and following posted directions, all school visitors will use a mounted keypad to request entry to each school.

All those entering will be viewed by camera, and have to say who they are and why they are requesting entry  before being allowed into the school, according to Trion High Principal Brian Edge.

Edge says no one will be allowed into the school without being "buzzed in" by school personnel who will view then person requesting entry on a t.v. screen.

Edge said someone without a valid reason for entering the school will not be allowed entry.

Edge said the move won't necessarily keep a violent incident from happening but will made students safer and parents more at ease. He said Sandy Hook Elementary had the exact electronic entry system installed at the time of the shooting incident.

"If someone wants to get in the school to cause violence, there's no way to keep them out," Edge explained. "But this system will give us time to tell teachers to lock the doors and to keep students away from windows if something bad does ever occur. We feel it is a worthwhile investment."

Trion schools also has video camera installed inside and outside the school for surveillance measures. 

In a called meeting Thursday, the town of Trion approved a bid for an industrial waterline; agreed to bid out the purchase of a new fire truck; and okayed emergency repairs at the wastewater treatment plant.

The council accepted a bid by Griffin Brothers Inc., of Marysville, Ga. of almost $376,000 for the waterline that will go down First Street. The majority of the cost will be paid by an ARC grant.

The council also approved emergency repairs at the wastewater treatment plant to alleviate the motors shutting down in the five return sludge pumps, in an effort to alleviate the possibility of an accidental spill at the plant. The cost of the work is estimated to be around $183,000. 

The council will meet again in its regular monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 25, at the Town Hall.

The Santa In Uniform Baseball and Softball Tournament begins this weekend at the Summerville Recreation Department and runs through April 27.

The tournament will host all county softball and baseball teams, ages 7and 8, and ages 9 and 10. Games begin at 11 a.m. Saturday with the last game Saturday starting at 5 p.m. The tournament continues on Monday with two to three games each evening through next Saturday. 

Umpires are volunteering their time with all proceeds from the tournament and concessions going to the City of Summerville Fire and Police departments Santa in Uniform program.

A Summerville woman was arrested Thursday charged with disorderly conduct.

According to the Sheriff's department report, 24-year-old Ali Higgins is accused of becoming involved in an altercation with her mother-in-law that became physical. 

In fact, deputies were dispatched to the South Third Street residence twice that evening. The first time, the two women were told to stay away from each other to avoid further confrontation.  The second time officers arrived on the scene Higgins was determined to be the primary aggressor and was arrested. 

Two men are reported to have entered the local Wal-Mart and left with $200 in cash after a quick-change maneuver, according to the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department.

According to the report, the men went to a cash register and bought some batteries. One of the men kept asking for change, which confused the cashier, who lost count of the money. The commonly used tactic is called a quick change, according to the report. The incident was turned over to investigators. Wal-Mart also supplied video and pictures of the suspects.  

A road safety check on Mountain View Road at Bearden Hill Road April 16, netted a methamphetamine arrest.

According to the Sheriff's Department report, 40-year-old David Marks drove a gray Nissan Maxima up to the check point and when officers ran his license they found out he was on felony probation for methamphetamine. Marks reportedly agreed to allow officers to search him and his vehicle.

That search reportedly turned up substances that tested positive for methamphetamine. Marks was charged with possession of meth. 

A Chattooga County man has been charged with simple battery under the family violence act.

According to the report 57-year-old Hoyt Marks is accused of getting into a physical confrontation with Lori Jones at their Old Highway 27 residence . Jones accused Marks of grabbing her and hitting her, open handed, on the cheek. Jones reportedly had a scrape on her hand. Jones also accused Marks of throwing her on the couch and choking her. She reportedly produced hair from her head that she said Marks pulled when they fought.

Marks was not at the home when officers arrived but was located by deputies and  was taken to jail.

A burglary was reported April 17 at a Ridgeway Road, Trion home.

According to the report, the burglary occurred sometime between 7:15 a.m. and just after noon. Forced entry is believed to have been made through the rear door. Exact items stolen are not listed on the report. However, the report indicates that firearms valued at $340; office equipment valued at $260; and electronics valued at $310 were taken, as well as other items with a total value of $1351. The investigation is ongoing, according to the report.  

Two Summerville men were arrested on drug charges after a traffic stop in Walker County this past week.

James Brian Henry and Frank Anthony Miller, both in their early 30s, were charged with possession of methamphetamine. Henry was also charged with obstruction, no license and no insurance. Miller was additionally charged with possession of drug-related objects and giving a false name to officers.

Both men live on Northern Heights Circle in Summerville, but at different addresses.
