A truck was reported stolen from Truck Town sometime between Christmas Eve and Wednesday. According to the report by the Chattooga County Sheriff's Office, Billy Jo Dooley said the last time he had seen the truck was on Christmas Eve in the front lot of the Highway 27 business. The truck is a 2005 F250 two-tone white, with tan trip. It has a six-inch lift kit with 20-inch black and chrome wheels and has a Truck Town drive-out tag. It is valued at $18,000.
A Summerville woman reported that her cat was stolen and then turned into animal control. Accordingo to the Sheriff's Department Report, the Nugget Ridge woman said her neighbor had heard two people bragging about stealing the cat and turning it into animal control. The woman checked animal control and the cat was there.
Trion has changed the time of it's basketball game Friday, Jan. 4. The Trion Bulldogs JV Girls were to have taken on rival Gordon Lee starting with Junior Varsity at 3:30. That game is now set for 3 p.m. Friday. According to Coach Lanny Thomas, JV boys follow at 4:30 with Varsity Girls playing at 6 p.m. and Varsity Boys at 7:30. THS students get in for $3.00.
A Hammond Road, Trion, resident reported on December 28 that someone has damaged his home. Billy McKissick told deputies he discovered the damage at the rear of the house. According to the report, three windows were damaged by rocks, with the rocks found inside the house. Someone reportedly had pulled a drain pipe from the house and the viny siding was damaged with several holes visible. Also a storage building in the backyard was entered and someone had written on the walls and left several candles inside. McKissick also reported that someone keeps smashing his mailbox which is at this driveway. The investigation is ongoing, according to the report. .
Someone attempted to enter a vehicle parked at a Lake Wanda Reita Road home over the weekend. And though they were unable to gain entry, the vehicle was damaged, according to the report by the Chattooga County Sheriff's Office. According to the report, filed by Christopher Ruth on December 29, the truck, bumper and tail light area of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier was damaged by someone apparently trying to gain entry to the truck of the vehicle with an unknown object. Nothing reportedly was taken in the incident that allegedly occurred the night before. No other information is contained in the report.
A woman reported that $400 in clothing was stolen from a dryer at the Mr. Clean Coin Laundry on Highway 27 on December 29. According to the report, the woman had put the clothes in the dryer, then got a phone call and had to leave. She said when she returned, the clothes were gone, as well as a white clothes basket she had put under the dryer. She said no one in the laundry mat had seen anyone take the clothes, which she valued at $400, according to the report. The laundry mat reportedly does have several cameras inside. Sheriff's Department investigators were notified.
The Lyerly Town Council will meet in its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 8.
One thing the council will discuss at the meeting is the items to be on the town's Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax List. The list will be combined with the other area municipalities lists and the voters will vote on the tax this year.

A Rossville resident reportedly has had personal experience with a new type of crime, prison inmates using cell phones to extort money from people on the outside.
In a report from the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Brenda Kick said she got a call at 2:30 am from an inmate at Hayes State Prison in Pennville. The picture showed her incarcerated son tied up, blindfolded, and being held at knife point. The demand was that she go to Walmart and buy a Green Dot Card for $300. Otherwise, the prisoners said her son would be killed. She called back and gave the number on the cash card. Her son is fine.
But last week, two inmates died inside Hayes and the GBI is investigating.
Ricky Myrick, of the Department of Corrections told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that there have been 25-30 reports of extortion. He said the "true catalyst behind our problem reverts back to the cell phones."
Inmates buy the phones at inflated prices, often from prison employees who are willing to take the risk for profit. Inmates use the Green Dot Cards because the flow of cash is difficult or impossible to trace.
The parent company of six area newspapers, including the Rome News Tribune and the Walker County Messenger has filed for Chapter 11 Reorganization. News Publishing also owns the Catoosa County News, the Calhoun Times, the Cedartown Standard and the Rockmart Journal. Plans are to "do business as usual" through the process. Unsecured debt and taxes amounting to around 7-million dollars will have to be restructured. News Publishing is headed by Burgett H. Mooney III, company president. The 157 employees were told of the plan Monday.
