A local woman reported that she was the victim of a scam about a month ago. According to the report filed by the Chattooga County Sheriff's department dated October 16, but received by AM1180 on Wednesday. The report says the 24-year-old woman made a telephone inquiry about an online secret shopper job and received instruction on how to make some money. She said she followed the instructions and received a check in the mail for $1,896.65. She said she went to cash the check at National Title Pawn and found out that the check was not any good. The check was from Chrome Fase Corp., of Florida and was made out to the woman. She said she had not given the company any of her personal information except for her email address. The incident was turned over to investigators.
On Tuesday Chattooga County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a call and found two men involved in a fight on the front porch of a Dickeyville Road, Trion, residence. According to the report, both men were loud, yelling boisterously, and cursing at each other. The men were identified as 18-year-old Jerome Paul Vaughn of a Dickeyville Road, Trion address; and 18-year-old Joseph Adam Wehner, of a Fair Street, Summerville address. Vaughn reportedly said that Wehner swung at him hitting him on the head and breaking his glasses which caused swelling to his forehead. Wehner told deputies that Vaughn became irate at his girlfriend, grabbed her personal property, and threw it out into the yard, and called her several obscene names. Both men were arrested charged with disorderly conduct and transported to the Chattooga County Jail.
The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) is inviting Northwest Georgia businesses that are looking
to fill current or future positions to participate in the Dalton Career Expo next month as a way to
make connections with skilled, available workers.
The career expo is planned for Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 12-5 p.m. at the Northwest Georgia
Trade and Convention Center in Dalton. It is a follow-up to the three-day Job Readiness and
Talent Attraction held recently in which more than 500 job seekers worked with GDOL staff to
create new resumes, and participated in workshops aimed on improving their interview skills,
marketing themselves, and using social media in their job search.
The GDOL is working with the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce-Development Authority,
City of Dalton, Whitfield County Government, Murray County Chamber of Commerce, and
members of the Murray-Whitfield faith community in the effort to match job seekers with
available jobs.

Thursday, November 15th at 8:30 am. Parent Information on Common Core Standards, Building

Chattooga County students attending or planning to attend Dalton State College have a new science building to look forward to. Ground was broken on Monday on the new 15-million dollar science building. The three-story structure will have 58-thousand square feet of space for math and science classrooms and laboratories. Dalton State offers four-year degrees in both biology and chemistry. The new addition to campus will feature state-of-the-art equipment and even private labs for student research.
U.S. Representative Tom Graves invites constituents to attend an open house of his office in Dalton. The open house will be an opportunity for constituents in the 9th District to meet with Graves and his staff, as well as tour the Dalton office. Light refreshments will be provided. Two Chattooga County residents booked into the Floyd County Jail on Monday, according to jail records.
Joel Landon Jones, of Walnut Street, Trion, was arrested by the Rome Police Department on Monday. 17-year-old Jones was charged with theft by Shoplifting.
Daniel Paul Ragan, of Rowlls Road, Lyerly, was arrested in Chattooga County on Monday on a warrant for Floyd County authorities. 28-year-old Ragan was charged with theft by taking.
A well-dressed woman comes out of the blue with a large amount of money that she has just found.
It’s the start of a scheme that can see the victim taken for thousands of dollars and Rome police are telling elderly people to know that it could happen to them. Authorities remind you if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
This specific one is called a "pigeon drop" scam and it reportedly happens once or twice a year in Rome. The victim is known as the pigeon.
Last Friday saw a Rome woman lose $6,700 in such a scam when she gave a professional looking woman the money as part of a buy-in to split a bag of money she had found that she said could contain as much as $100,000.
The suspect was described as a white female, perhaps in her late 20s, with short blonde hair, a brown mini-skirt and light colored top.
Quite often the perpetrator tells victims the money will be used to pay a lawyer for filing fees to make it legally acceptable for them to split the money.
Police say the victim of Friday’s incident said the suspect talked very fast and seemed to know exactly what to do and why they shouldn’t involve the authorities.
The Rome police say that if a person locates any money they should call 911 and turn it into the proper authorities while they attempt to locate the owner.
If the owner is not found after 90 days the person who found the money can request a hearing with the chief of police that will determine if they can keep the money.
