An authentic brass Noble Cannon produced in Rome will present four firings Thursday, May 17 at the Rome-Floyd Visitor Center.
Firings will take place at 9:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The events are free, sponsored by the Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau and hosted by the city of Rome.
The event celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Noble cannon, one of the most significant Civil War weapons to emerge from Georgia. Approximately 70 cannons were forged during the Civil War at the Noble Foundry on the Etowah River in downtown Rome.
The specific cannon returning to Rome is named Miss Annie Lee after Robert E. Lee’s daughter who died in October of 1862 as the cannon was being forged. The cannon was named by the MacBeth Light Artillery while owned by the town of Williamston, S.C. While records are obscure, experts believe the gun was never used in actual battle but was shipped to Augusta for protection of that city.
Following the 7 p.m. firing, a mini concert will be provided by the 8th Regiment Band. A guest of honor, Robert Noble, will also speak at the event.

A 28-year-old Armuchee man died in a one-vehicle wreck on Floyd Springs Road late Sunday night, according to Floyd County police spokesman Jerome Poole.
Joseph Allen Norris, 28, of 73 Gazelle Dew Road, hit a culvert and lost control of his 2003 Honda Civic.
The vehicle went down an embankment and Norris, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the car.
He was pronounced dead shortly after midnight on Monday.
The City of Syummerville will hold its annual Spring Clean-Up May 28 through June 1.
The City will pick up household junk and waste. Items to be picked up should be placed ajacent to or at the road right-of-way — normal garbage pick-up area. Brush and limbs should be separated from residential garbage. Trees, limbs, stumps and logs cut by commercial tree services will not be picked up.
Items that are unacceptable at the Chattooga County Transfer Station will not be picked up. the city will be unable to pick up:

Chattooga County Public Works Director Lamar Canada said that the Georgia Department of Transportation has closed the bridge on Halls Valley Road just north of east Halls Valley Road. The bridge was closed as a result of an inspection by the DOT and will remain closed until repairs are made. Canada said that repairs could take up to a month to complete.

Man Makes Amends For Stealing Hydrangeas _ In 1958
No matter how much digging investigators did, the crime remained open until a thief turned himself in and returned the fruits of his theft.
In this case, the crime was stealing two hydrangeas from Centennial Park in Nashville in May 1958. And the thief, 72-year-old Bill Teitleff of Joy, Ky., returned plants from the root system of the purloined flowers to the park on Thursday.
Teitliff said he took the flowering plant because he didn't have enough money at the time to buy a Mother's Day gift for his mother. At the time of the theft, Teitleff was 18-years-old and just married.
Teitleff says he can now walk through Centennial Park without feeling guilty.
