Defendants in RICO Case Out on Bond

The investigation into thefts from the Floyd County Board of Education began with a report of stolen muck boots.

But more than a year later, it’s a multi-million dollar investigation with police seizing hundreds of thousands of dollars in property and items purchased from money stolen for the school system.

Two storage buildings full of stolen items that included vehicles, furniture, several tractors, a safe and other assorted items will be auctioned off in the future.

Another storage facility is full of other items purchased with proceeds of the funds allegedly stolen from the school system. Derry Richardson, the former maintenance director at Floyd County Schools, who has been at the center of the investigation, is still allowed to live at his residence in Chattooga County but the residence and its contents have been seized.

Richardson was the maintenance director at the Floyd County Board of Education for about ten years. But the thefts from the school system may have started when Richardson was working for a vendor.

Richardson and nine others which included his wife, father, brother and two former employees of the Floyd County Board of Education are out of jail on bond on theft and racketeering charges. More arrests are expected.
