The Town of Trion will hold their October workshop and regular council meeting this evening at Trion Town Hall.  On the agenda for this evening’s meeting, the council will discuss purchasing one of two memorial crosses for the veteran’s memorial located near the track field.  According to Mayor Lanny Thomas, the town’s veteran’s committee has raised enough money to purchase one of the crosses and the mayor is asking the council to purchase the other cross at a cost of $9,100.  Also, the town council will hear from the Trion Recreation Department about the purchase of additional surveillance cameras for the rec center.  WZQZ News will carry this evening’s Trion Town Council meeting live on our Facebook page starting with the work session at 6 PM.  You can see a complete agenda for this evening’s meeting below:

An accident on Tuesday on Highway 114 at Chattoogaville appears to have been caused by a driver attempting to get around a log truck that was turning into a private driveway.  The two-vehicle resulted in minor injuries. According to the Georgia State Patrol, the accident involved a 2018 Ford Mustang, driven by John Mark Weaver of Ringgold, and a 2000 Peterbilt Conventional truck operated by Anthony Jarrett of the M&K Dawson logging company. The incident unfolded as both vehicles were traveling eastbound on GA 114. Witnesses reported that while the Peterbilt truck was executing a left turn into a private driveway, the Mustang attempted to maneuver around it, unaware of the truck’s intention to turn. This misjudgment led to the Mustang colliding with the driver’s side of the truck. The collision left debris scattered across the roadway, snarling traffic for a period of time. Witness accounts indicated that the Mustang was traveling at a high speed prior to the crash. According to the report, Jarrett was taken by Atrium Health Floyd EMS with minor injuries, as were passengers in Weaver’s vehicle.  The incident is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol Post in Rome.

In a move to address the aftermath of recent devastating hurricanes that have plagued the Southeastern United States, Georgia Speaker of the House Jon Burns (R-Newington) has formally reached out to key Congressional leaders, including Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Mike Johnson, Senate Leaders Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. The letter, also addressed to Georgia’s Congressional Delegation, requests urgent emergency relief funds for southeastern states significantly impacted by Hurricanes Debbie, Helene, and Milton.

Get ready for a sweet treat this Saturday as the Summerville-Trion Optimist Club hosts their annual Halloween Candy Walk in downtown Summerville. From 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, trick-or-treaters of all ages are invited to stroll down the East Washington Street Streetscape area, where local businesses and organizations will be handing out candy and treats. To accommodate the event, the East Washington Street Streetscape entrances will be closed to traffic from 6 AM. to 3 PM, starting at US 27/Commerce Street and extending to The University Street Intersection. Economy Street entrances to East Washington Street will also be closed during this time. “This is always a fun event for the community,” said Cindy Rivers-McGraw, event organizer. “We encourage all local businesses, churches, clubs, and civic organizations to participate in handing out candy and treats to the little spooks.” Anyone interested in participating can contact Cindy Rivers McGraw at (706) 466-9014 for registration and set-up details.

A 37-year-old Chattooga County woman was arrested last Saturday, October 19th,  for damaging property at her sister’s mobile home.  Donna Hill faces charges of criminal trespass after breaking two windows at the trailer on Saunders Road. Chattooga County Sheriffs Deputies were  contacted by Aquilla White, Hill’s sister, who was concerned about Hill’s well-being. Hill was later found at a neighboring trailer and attempted to pay for the damage, but became combative and resisted arrest. Despite the chaotic situation, Hill eventually agreed to seek help after consulting with her sister, who expressed support for her rehabilitation. Hill was arrested and taken to the Chattooga County Jail on charges of criminal trespass.
