Initial filings for unemployment benefits in Georgia rose the previous week compared with the week prior, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday. New jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, increased to 4,675 in the week ending October 5, up from 3,982 the week before, the Labor Department said. U.S. unemployment claims rose to 258,000 last week, up 33,000 claims from 225,000 the week prior on a seasonally adjusted basis. North Carolina, recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Helene, saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims jumping by 290.2%. Wyoming, meanwhile, saw the largest percentage drop in new claims, with claims dropping by 20.1%.

Hurricane Helene has caused extensive damage in Georgia, particularly in the agriculture industry, with over $6. 4 billion in economic losses reported by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The forestry sector, which is the state’s top industry, has been hit hard, with nearly $2 billion in damages due to the destruction of timber that may not be salvageable. This surpasses the impact of Hurricane Michael in 2018.
It looks like we will see some of the coolest temperatures of the season by the middle of this week. Dry conditions will continue in Northwest Georgia through Friday. Rain is not expected for several days. No tropical activity is anticipated in the Atlantic basin, but a strong shortwave system will move through the Midwest and eastern states early next week, with below-normal temperatures. Frost advisories are in place for southern Fannin County and Northeastern Georgia valleys. The National Weather Service says that the average first fall freeze in Northeast Georgia occurs around October 12th. Here in Northwest Georgia, the average frost date is normally between October 21-October 31. While we might not get below freezing this coming week, cooler mornings are expected with morning low temperatures around 35 degrees by midweek.

The Chattooga Indians lost to Christian Heritage on Friday night at home with a final score of 49-14. The Indians are now 5-3 on the season and will be off next week before traveling to Dade County on October 25. The Trion Bulldogs were off last night and will return next Friday to face off with Greenville at home.
The City of Summerville is currently celebrating its annual “Steam into Summerville Railroad Days” at Dowdy Park and the Summerville Depot. The 5-week celebration features a variety of festivities for visitors of all ages, including the Tennessee Valley Railroad’s Summerville Steam Excursion arriving weekly on Saturdays through November 3, as well as on three Sundays: October 13, 20, and November 3. Tickets for these excursions can be purchased on the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum website. The celebration kicks off today with the Summerville Renaissance Festival, featuring pageantry, arts, music, artisans, and food. Guests can enjoy performances from Renaissance performers from Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama, with a passenger train arrival scheduled for 1:00 p. m. and a turning of the Summerville Turntable. Hours for the festival are 11:00 a. m. to 5:00 p. m.
