As of April 2024, the average weekly wage for full-time construction workers was $1,007, a decrease of over 10% from a high of $1,112 in late 2020. These factors make it difficult for workers to afford housing in the cities where they work, threatening the industry’s long-term sustainability. To address this workforce shortage and ensure the success of infrastructure investments, stakeholders must focus on innovative recruitment and training solutions, as well as policies to make housing more affordable for construction workers.
The ports of Savannah and Brunswick have reopened following a tentative agreement between striking dockworkers and the U. S. Maritime Alliance. The agreement, reached after a three-day strike, includes a 62% raise over six years for dock workers, a significant increase from the initial offer of 50%. President Biden applauded the agreement, commending both the ILA dockworkers and the U. S. Maritime Alliance for their efforts. The Port of Savannah, the second-busiest on the East Coast, and the Port of Brunswick, the nation’s second-busiest for vehicle cargo, are known for their world-class service. The reopening comes after a challenging period for the Georgia ports, which were impacted by Hurricane Helene before the strike began. The agreement has suspended the strike until Jan. 15 to allow for further negotiations towards a permanent resolution.
Georgia’s gas tax suspension, initiated on Thursday, has begun to show positive effects on fuel prices across the state, with rates gradually declining by Friday. Yesterday, Georgia’s average was down to $2.83 per gallon. In our area, gas prices were averaging $2.73 in Chattooga County.

Kemp expressed frustration at having to request additional Georgia counties be included in Biden’s disaster declaration. Initially, only 11 counties were covered, despite nearly 90 facing significant damage. Biden stated that all Georgia counties will likely be eligible for FEMA aid. Critics have questioned Biden’s handling of the disaster, especially as federal aid appeared limited while billions were allocated elsewhere. Biden chose to monitor the situation from his Delaware home instead of the White House, a decision that faced backlash.
A Cedar Bluff man is facing multiple charges after an altercation with law enforcement on Gadsden Road that escalated when he allegedly bit a police officer. According to records from the Floyd County Jail, 39-year-old John Edwin Terry Jr. was seen aggressively pounding on the side of a parked camper trailer early Wednesday morning. When a Cave Spring police officer approached Terry to inquire about his behavior, he reportedly became belligerent. The situation quickly deteriorated as the officer informed Terry that he was under arrest. In a fit of aggression, Terry is accused of striking the officer and biting him on the left forearm. Backup officers soon arrived on the scene, successfully subduing Terry and taking him into custody. He is now facing several serious charges, including felony obstruction of law enforcement, aggravated battery, disorderly conduct, and possession of pills not in the original container. The injured officer was treated for the bite and is expected to make a full recovery. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and are urging anyone with additional information to come forward. .

Ohio Senator and Republican Vice-Presidential nominee JD Vance visited Georgia, where he rallied supporters at The Mill, a former jeans factory turned event space, highlighting the decline of American manufacturing. Vance emphasized the need for more domestic production and claimed that only he and former President Donald Trump could steer the country in the right direction. He expressed plans to streamline relief efforts following powerful storms affecting rural Georgians, criticizing the Biden administration’s response.
The long-term weather forecast is shaping up to be absolutely stunning over the next week, with a mid-level low pressure system expected to track eastward along the border between the United States and Canada, eventually making its way towards the New England region. As this system moves through, it will usher in much cooler and drier air from the northwest, significantly reducing the chances of any shower or thunderstorm activity through next Friday. Temperatures, which had been quite warm in the 80s to start, will gradually trend cooler following the passage of a cold front early next week. By Tuesday, high temperatures are forecast to top out in the pleasant mid-to-upper 70s and lower 80s, providing a refreshing, fall-like feel, especially in the mornings when lows dip down into the comfortable mid-40s to 50s. Any additional weak frontal boundaries riding along the broader upper-level trough will continue to push towards the Southeast, leaving the region with minimal precipitation chances – less than 10% – over the next seven days. Overall, the long-range outlook is shaping up to be simply amazing, with abundant sunshine, dry conditions, and seasonably cool temperatures making for a gorgeous stretch of autumn-like weather.
