Summerville Police are investigating a burglary that was reported on Wednesday of this week.  Police say that they were called to a home on Scoggins Street on Wednesday evening where the homeowner told them someone had broken into his house and had stolen two handguns.  The guns were a Rock Island .45 caliber and a Sig Sauer . 40 caliber.  Police found where someone had pried open the rear door, causing damage to the striker plate.  The homeowner explained to police that he works 12 hour shifts and had noticed the handguns were gone that morning.  Police entered the stolen guns into the statewide data base.

The Atrium Health Floyd-Polk Foundation awarded more than $1.3 million in grants to Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center and Atrium Health Floyd Polk Medical Center which will be used to support 33 community agencies as part of their inaugural Community Impact Grant cycle for 2024, including $65,000 to Chattooga County agencies. The awards were announced Wednesday, Sept. 11, at an event at Coosa Country Club.

Due to the predicted impact of the remnants of Francine, forecasted by the National Weather Service for Chattooga County, the competition portion of the Summerville Steam Chili & Brunswick Stew Cook-Off has now postponed to September 28 and will be part of the festivities of the Cowboy Western Heritage Festival.

The arrival of the TVRM Passenger Train for Saturday, September 14 is still scheduled for around 1:00 p.m. to be followed by the working of the Summerville Turntable. A wide variety of artisans, food and craft vendors will be located inside of the Summerville Depot during the hours of 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. for a special market in celebration of the train arrival. The public is invited to shop a variety of handcrafted arts & jewelry, hand sewn items, vintage items, homemade breads in a variety of flavors, jams, bar-b-que, wings and more.

To be eligible for the President’s List, the student must maintain a GPA of 3.8 or higher during the semester with a course load of at least 12 credit hours. Goodwill of North Georgia is inviting job seekers to a hiring event that will be taking place on Tuesday, September 17th in Rome.  Goodwill works with employers to connect job seekers with jobs in industries such as healthcare, transportation, logistics, technology and more.  Multiple employers will be represented at the event that will be held from 10 AM until Noon at the Rome Goodwill Career Center, located at 154 Hicks Drive in Rome.   Over 150 full and part-time positions will be available at the job fair.

A handwritten note was found this morning at Leroy Massey Elementary School that implied a shooting.  School officials and law enforcement have deemed the threat to be not credible, but the school will remain on a soft lockdown for the remainder of the day.  Chattooga County School Supt.
