The race for mayor in Summerville is heating up after a city council meeting last week where Councilman Rickey Hughes resigned to run against the current Mayor Harry Harvey, who has not yet decided on re-election. Mayor Harvey stated he is still considering whether to run again, saying he has a month to make his decision.
During the meeting, Hughes announced his resignation and intention to vie for the mayor’s position, addressing Harvey directly and emphasizing his commitment to meeting the necessary legal deadlines. This resignation is expected to kick-off a competitive election and possible changes in the city’s leadership.
Another candidate, 64-year-old military veteran Kenny Mack, has also expressed his desire to run but has stated he will withdraw his candidacy if Mayor Harvey decides to seek re-election. Mack made this clear on May 6 when he filed his intent to run.
All candidates must qualify for the election between August 18 and August 22, with the qualifying period starting at 8:30 a.m. on the third Monday in August and ending at 4:30 p.m. that Friday. The fee to qualify for the mayoral position is $216. As the qualifying deadline approaches, many observers are eager to learn of Mayor Harvey’s decision, which will significantly impact the race.
